Natural Bridge, Virginia

We are staying at the Natural Bridge Virginia KOA so why wouldn't there be a Natural Bridge? Posting a couple of photos from this tucked away place in Virginia hills. Interestingly enough this was a favorite place of several of our Presidents, including George Washington, who carved his initials in the rock when he was a young man. One of the photos outlines the intitials with a white box...you may have to click on the photo and enlarge it to see the carving. Anyway it was a nice place and thankfully cooler by the Natural Bridge that anywhere else. It has been very warm here and it was a relief to have a little cooler air. We are also visiting the Safari Animal Drive-Thru Zoo adjacent to the KOA. We are off to another place in Virginia as we do not have to be in Washington DC until Saturday.

Mayberry (Mt. Airy) NC

Sunday we drove through the town that the Andy Griffith Show was filmed. Attached are a couple of photos that you elders may recognize! Leisurely day through the Blue Ridge Parkway into Virginia where we settle for 2 nights.

Blue Ridge Parkway and Boone North Carolina

June 24 - Blue Ridge Parkway through NC and Boon NC. We traveled the BRP today and although it was lovely to look at the mountains and weather was awesome with a nice cool breeze, it sn't particularly spectacular in sight. It's mostly a hazy blue and mountainous. We stayed at the KOA in Boone, NC at an elevation of 4000 ft. Nice place but the weather was a little unpredictable - warm sunny afternoon at the pool and then within minutes dark thunder clouds and heavy rain. You think New England has finicky weather! The campground has farmland adjacent to it and we had some close encounters with the Rhode island Red chickens and the man of the house Rooster as well as some goats. I am posting a couple of photos for Harris and Fred.

North Carolina

June 22 - we landed in North Carolina today and are staying at Lakewood RV Park. It is the friendliest park we have visited in quite some time and we had a fun time with other folks in the pool. Fairly warm here today. I am uploading a couple of photos from the pool - too bad Les
doesn't have any company in it! I wonder why no one wants to play with him?

June 23 - today was the free donut and coffee day at the Park (guess who was up extra early for that!!) and then we were off to Chimney Rock Park in NC. This was a scheduled day trip. In order to get up to the highest viewpoint you take an elevator 26 floors that was cut into solid granite. We thought Shirley would really enjoy this and it would be a fantastic view for all of us. When we arrived we were told that the elevator was not working today “oops sorry” so we decided we would have to tour Chimney Rock another time in the future. Back to the pool and some water exercises with tossing balls. We thought we were going to be relaxing but everyone
welcomed us back and immediately starting tossing to us. We finally had to get out to rest!

Florida, Georgia, South Carolina

June 20 - Happy Father’s Day! 8:40am off we go - ahead of schedule! Leisurely drive to Coastal Georgia RV Resort with the last 10 minutes in pouring rain, but it cleared quickly. Les went for a swim and we settled in for the Red Sox/Dodger game.

June 21 - after our morning exercise, off to South Carolina. We’ll stay one day there and then we’ll head off to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Our blog will start slow as there isn’t many places to visit until we head into the mountains! I did spring for a new camera so as soon as I can figure out how to work it (but I did get the basics from Nancy) will start posting some of the better ones!

Friday!

Crunch time for all of us! We leave Sunday and head for South Carolina for a quick visit and then off to the Blue Ridge Parkway. We aren't sure exactly where we will land except that we have to be in Washington DC for July 3rd checkin at the campground. We'll spent at least 1 week there and maybe even have tea with the Prez!

Countdown Week!

Somehow it seems that Sunday will never arrive, but we know it will and quickly! Last year we were rushing around, counting pills, stocking the RV, making lists and then more lists to be sure we didn't forget anything! This year we seem to be more calm and quick a bit more organized - wonder why? Hope you enjoy our blogging this year and if you have any suggestions for us please email us or make a post.
